Catalyst Black combines elements of a MOBA game with the gameplay of a 10v10 battle royale shooter. It allows players to move characters on-screen using the Joystick keys, and pits them against each other in fights. Afterwards, players can either finish their goal or choose a different mode. In battles based on the MOBA genre, characters appear in a 2D top-down format. Both teams use only ADCs during battles in Catalyst Black. Each player can use two heavy weapons— one primary and one heavy. Both heavy weapons require a period of cooldown before they can be used again, but deal more damage than the primary weapon. You can instantly transform into a larger and more powerful version of yourself through a process called metamorphosis. This grants you increased health and damage like League of Legends’ Gnar. If your transformation is interrupted by low health or if you choose to desactivate, you will revert back to a human form. However, while transformed, you are only capable of hand-to-hand combat with enemies near you. Your opponents instead use long-range weapons in combat. You can easily become a target of incoming bullets or a human kite if you're not in an ideal location. Keep in mind that you can’t die while in a monster form; your blood supply will be exhausted and you will revert to human form. You can use this skill to surprise your enemy when you are near death. Select a monster's shape and skills by changing your mask. While hiding in the bushes, you can easily ambush and lure enemy heroes into a trap. This also allows you and your teammates to gain an advantage over the enemy due to their inability to see you.

The game mode called Capture the Flag is often played in the Catalyst Black gamemode. The objective of this mode is to return the flag to your base after you and your teammates attempt to steal it from your opponent's base. This mode features a long distance between bases; players respawn in 3 seconds. Professional and skilled players can keep matches that last up to 40 minutes. If all players are experienced, then they can hold flag carriers who go incredibly fast. Great teamwork is a must if you want to win; it's essential to have nine teammates. And the player who holds the flag — even if he’s the fastest — needs protection from the other players. In Flag Hunter, your team must defeat monsters anywhere on the map to protect flags from them for anywhere between 30 and 75 seconds. This is similar to Capture the Flag; however, flags are not located on the opponent's base. Instead, they are anywhere on the map, so flag carriers defend the flag instead of returning it to their base camp. Fights on the map take place due to constant fighting among the combatants because flag carriers must be present to defend the flag instead of returning it to their base camp. For bonus points, collect the Keepers' cores after defeating them. There are no formal rating systems for games currently created on Catalyst Black. However, the intense competition encourages players to fully immerse themselves in the game by providing them with a tutorial for each game mode prior to playing a real match.

Currently, the character only changes your appearance in-game. However, their equipment affects your skills and strength. You can access the Loadout to change equipment, change appearance, upgrade equipment, and add new equipment. Since Catalyst Black supports 10 characters currently, it's easy to see how important this feature is.
