The player's purpose in FNAASM is to monitor changes to the restaurant and locations where they are assigned. These nighttime duties become increasingly bizarre as the game progresses. Players need to use electronics found in FNASM in order to avoid the random raids of the animatronics. They have different methods for coping, such as closing doors, using costumes and Shining flashlights at the animatronics to reset progress and continue with survival. If a player isn't diligent when dealing with the animatronics, they will die and be faced with death on the last night of the terrifying night watcher shift in the cursed facility.

The only way for the player to win each night is to survive until morning; that way, they can use whatever resources they have to stay alive. Energy is extremely important because it's required to operate the entire facility; additionally, it's necessary to stockpile energy to prepare for more difficult nights of work. Doing this allows the player to survive, defend themselves against animatronics and complete other objectives.

FNASM unlocks new content and new animatronics every time a night of survival is successful. The higher discomfort level of these animatronics causes players to focus on different reflexes than the primary ones. Doing this allows them to experience the most difficult final night working at the facility. This also gives players a chance to relive the most brutal moments of their career.

The game's animatronics weren't formed through savage machines— they all have creepy stories behind their new appearances. Players can find notes that pop up around their appearances from different characters while completing the night shift in the game. The creative connections between the animatronics motivate players to work hard and finish all the missions in the game.
