The game uses six decks of cards, each with different commands. These cards allow players to command armies and recharge them between acts. Up to four players can play the game at once. In order to access this experience, players must choose to face Morden's army or the tower in a challenge. Alternatively, players can choose to send a challenge to their friends so they can be dueled in the tower battle. The game also includes many of the same content as the original version. By rescuing hostages throughout the game, players earn additional APs and other bonuses.

Each one features a special ability that automatically activates once they reach enough energy. They are also capable of attacking near or far away. Like other games that feature goalkeepers, units move towards the opponent automatically. This game just requires selecting the right units to help support the pioneers as they travel down the road. There's no need to control or interact with any of the units moving automatically. Buying units based on their strength costs proportionally more money. For example, a soldier with only a pistol pays 30 AP per unit. A soldier with a machine gun pays 60 AP per unit. You can upgrade your troops' technology and weaponry as they progress. Depending on the difficulty level, your troops start with basic weapons and technology. As the game progresses, you can purchase flamethrowers, armored vehicles and tanks. When fighting the boss enemy, buying these upgrades is crucial.

METAL SLUG ATTACK features a lot of game modes compared to other game updates. This can be seen with the inclusion of many game modes in the game.
