This app require ROOT access and a phone with a Qualcomm MSM based chipset.

SnoopSnitch analyse the mobile network radio data to warn you about insecure networks, mobile threats such as fake base stations (IMSI catchers), user tracking through silent/stealth SMS and SS7 MiTM attacks. It does not prevent such attacks.

Compatibility:

To use SnoopSnitch, a rooted device with a Qualcomm (MSM) radio processor is required. Unfortunately, custom ROMs are not officially supported as they can lack the necessary proprietary kernel module. Even then, certain Qualcomm chipset combinations are not supported. For example, devices based on the APQ8084.

User Data Contribution

This application also uses data contributed by other users. If you choose to upload your measurement results or security events, you can help improve this data base and support future research. The data uploaded is encrypted and personal information has been removed. This is also a user setting. SnoopSnitch will ask for confirmation whenever any information is uploaded.

Required Permissions

• ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION / ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION: Allow you to record your location when IMSI catchers and security events are detected
• ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE: Is used to check for available network so that up or downloads can proceed
• ACCESS_SUPERUSER: To use the non API supported Qualcomm diagnosis interface to capture radio data
• CALL_PHONE: Needed to make the test calls
• GET_TASKS: Retrieve state of helper processes interacting with diagnostic interface
• INTERNET: Is used to download new data from gsmmap.org and upload radio traces and debug logs upon users request
• READ / WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: Access saved trace logs on SD card for later upload
• READ_PHONE_STATE: Used to detect what kind of network you are currently using (GSM,UMTS,LTE etc)
• RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED: To start App automatically when phone is restarted
• SEND_SMS: Needed to send the test SMS
• RECEIVE_SMS: Needed to receive the test SMS
• GET_TASKS: Retrieve state of helper processes interacting with diagnostic interface
• WAKE_LOCK: Stop phone from falling asleep during long-running analysis steps


Usage:

When you run the "active-test", SnoopSnitch will:
• Send and receive a few* SMS to a free number
• Make and receive a few* phone calls to a free number
* The number depend on your settings, which is 3 by default.

DO NOT ANSWER (or reject) THE TEST CALLS!

If you answer or reject the test phone calls, you will get banned for 24 hours, and the test will fail.

Some Reasons for Getting Banned:
• Answering the test call
• Rejecting the test call
• Your answering machine answers the call before app have a chance to hangup

Getting Unbanned:
• Wait 24 hours and try again after restarting the App

Reasons for Getting Permanently Banned:
• Repeat the above bans after getting unbanned
