Additional effects can be achieved through the combination of multiple pieces. The player will constantly attempt to collect as many points as possible by experimenting with different combinations. This game features many locations that have unique effects. Some locations offer players items they can buy, while others give the player a specific number of points. Additionally, players should note that many locations leave an impression on players. Passing through and checking into the Inns provide players with three points, the highest possible value. Any buildings found at a hot spring must be passed through by other players before they can rest.

Tokaido™ has many methods for obtaining points, and careful consideration should be given when collecting these points. The first method is to collect many sets of similar items with varying properties. Any number of these items can be acquired and the total value will vary based on the number of items. For example, acquiring a second souvenir in a different shape or color earns players 3 points, or acquiring a third earns players 5 points. Up to 4 different items can be obtained and they earn 7 points. Certain places have rules about buying or selling specific items. For example, when traveling to a particular destination, you have the right to purchase food or souvenirs. Choosing an option that results in an active experience gives players the ability to increase their XP. This is true even if the traveler chooses a different option and makes another choice on their second visit to the same place. People learn about Japanese culture when they take a liking to it. Players start the game as one of five different tourists who want to do various activities. They choose which attraction to explore next by playing the game. Certain locations provide the player with specific items that can be used in a shooting mini-game to earn points. Travelers hope to earn as many points as possible by completing activities around the city. Items players collect give varying point totals. Different combinations result in different award numbers. There are many locations that players travel through and choose to stop at each Inns. Each activity is optional for the player.
