A famous archaeologist named Professor Layton specializes in detective work and puzzle solving. One day, a mysterious letter arrived at his home. A letter written by an assistant 10 years later named Luke revealed turmoil in the present and future London. With no way out, Luke asked his older self to help him. The professor initially dismissed the letter's contents as a juvenile prank. However, the letter compelled him to recall the tragic event that occurred the previous week. It was the public's first glimpse at mankind's first ever time-stopping invention. Many key figures from the country showed up to this event, but an accident with the machinery caused an enormous explosion that took a serious toll on the country. The event also resulted in the departure of the nation's prime minister Bill Hawks, who mysteriously disappeared. Distinguishing between the past and present is impossible. It's clear that the recent events are connected to a letter written 10 years later. To learn more, Professor Layton and Luke moved to the locations mentioned in the letter. From this point onward, an odyssey begins to solve the biggest mystery they have ever encountered.

The Layton series’ Unwound Future in HD is a 3D puzzle game similar to the previous two versions. It’s comprised of standalone brainteaser puzzles that focus on talking to characters, touching the touchscreen for exploration and moving from place to place. In Layton: Unwound Future in HD, a gold coin is required to unlock additional puzzle options. Getting these coins is simple; just run into any scenes with your stylus to collect them. Alternatively, you can get help with any puzzles and still not find a solution. This is because the game gives you a special powerup for just $2. — The Story —
After solving a multitude of curious conundrums, renowned archeologist Professor Layton receives a rather peculiar letter.

Unable to shake the feeling that the time machine's explosion may somehow be connected, Professor Layton and Luke set off to the location mentioned in the letter, a clock shop on Midland Road in Baldwin, embarking on what might be the biggest mystery they have ever encountered.
